	Sort::Versions allows easy sorting of mixed non-numeric and numeric strings, like the 'version numbers' that many shared library systems and revision control packages use. This is quite useful if you are trying to deal with shared libraries. It can also be applied to applications that intersperse variable-width numeric fields within text. Other applications can undoubtedly be found. For an explanation of the algorithm, it's simplest to look at these examples: 1.1 < 1.2 1.1a < 1.2 1.1 < 1.1.1 1.1 < 1.1a 1.1.a < 1.1a 1 < a a < b 1 < 2 1.1-3 < 1.1-4 1.1-5 < 1.1.6 More precisely (but less comprehensibly), the two strings are treated as subunits delimited by periods or hyphens. Each subunit can contain any number of groups of digits or non-digits. If digit groups are being compared on both sides, a numeric comparison is used, otherwise a ASCII ordering is used. A group or subgroup with more units will win if all comparisons are equal. A period binds digit groups together more tightly than a hyphen. Some packages use a different style of version numbering: a simple real number written as a decimal. Sort::Versions has limited support for this style: when comparing two subunits which are both digit groups, if either subunit has a leading zero, then both are treated like digits after a decimal point. So for example: 0002 < 1 1.06 < 1.5 This won39t always work, because there won39t always be a leading zero in real-number style version numbers. There is no way for Sort::Versions to know which style was intended. But a lot of the time it will do the right thing. If you are making up version numbers, the style with (possibly) more than one dot is the style to use. 	The 'Specio' distribution provides classes for representing type constraints and coercion, along with syntax sugar for declaring them. Note that this is not a proper type system for Perl. Nothing in this distribution will magically make the Perl interpreter start checking a value's type on assignment to a variable. In fact, there's no built-in way to apply a type to a variable at all. Instead, you can explicitly check a value against a type, and optionally coerce values to that type. My long-term goal is to replace Moose's built-in types and MooseX::Types with this module. 	"Spiffy" is a framework and methodology for doing object oriented (OO) programming in Perl. Spiffy combines the best parts of Exporter.pm, base.pm, mixin.pm and SUPER.pm into one magic foundation class. It attempts to fix all the nits and warts of traditional Perl OO, in a clean, straightforward and (perhaps someday) standard way. Spiffy borrows ideas from other OO languages like Python, Ruby, Java and Perl 6. It also adds a few tricks of its own. If you take a look on CPAN, there are a ton of OO related modules. When starting a new project, you need to pick the set of modules that makes most sense, and then you need to use those modules in each of your classes. Spiffy, on the other hand, has everything you'll probably need in one module, and you only need to use it once in one of your classes. If you make Spiffy.pm the base class of the basest class in your project, Spiffy will automatically pass all of its magic to all of your subclasses. You may eventually forget that you're even using it! The most striking difference between Spiffy and other Perl object oriented base classes, is that it has the ability to export things. If you create a subclass of Spiffy, all the things that Spiffy exports will automatically be exported by your subclass, in addition to any more things that you want to export. And if someone creates a subclass of your subclass, all of those things will be exported automatically, and so on. Think of it as "Inherited Exportation", and it uses the familiar Exporter.pm specification syntax. To use Spiffy or any subclass of Spiffy as a base class of your class, you specify the '-base' argument to the 'use' command. use MySpiffyBaseModule -base; You can also use the traditional 'use base 'MySpiffyBaseModule';' syntax and everything will work exactly the same. The only caveat is that Spiffy.pm must already be loaded. That's because Spiffy rewires base.pm on the fly to do all the Spiffy magics. Spiffy has support for Ruby-like mixins with Perl6-like roles. Just like 'base' you can use either of the following invocations: use mixin 'MySpiffyBaseModule'; use MySpiffyBaseModule -mixin; The second version will only work if the class being mixed in is a subclass of Spiffy. The first version will work in all cases, as long as Spiffy has already been loaded. To limit the methods that get mixed in, use roles. (Hint: they work just like an Exporter list): use MySpiffyBaseModule -mixin => qw(:basics x y !foo); In object oriented Perl almost every subroutine is a method. Each method gets the object passed to it as its first argument. That means practically every subroutine starts with the line: my $self = shift; Spiffy provides a simple, optional filter mechanism to insert that line for you, resulting in cleaner code. If you figure an average method has 10 lines of code, that's 10% of your code! To turn this option on, you just use the '- Base' option instead of the '-base' option, or add the '-selfless' option. If source filtering makes you queazy, don't use the feature. I personally find it addictive in my quest for writing squeaky clean, maintainable code. A useful feature of Spiffy is that it exports two functions: 'field' and 'const' that can be used to declare the attributes of your class, and automatically generate accessor methods for them. The only difference between the two functions is that 'const' attributes can not be modified; thus the accessor is much faster. One interesting aspect of OO programming is when a method calls the same method from a parent class. This is generally known as calling a super method. Perl's facility for doing this is butt ugly: sub cleanup { my $self = shift; $self->scrub; $self->SUPER::cleanup(@_); } Spiffy makes it, er, super easy to call super methods. You just use the 'super' function. You don't need to pass it any arguments because it automatically passes them on for you. Here's the same function with Spiffy: sub cleanup { $self->scrub; super; } Spiffy has a special method for parsing arguments called 'parse_arguments', that it also uses for parsing its own arguments. You declare which arguments are boolean (singletons) and which ones are paired, with two special methods called 'boolean_arguments' and 'paired_arguments'. Parse arguments pulls out the booleans and pairs and returns them in an anonymous hash, followed by a list of the unmatched arguments. Finally, Spiffy can export a few debugging functions 'WWW', 'XXX', 'YYY' and 'ZZZ'. Each of them produces a YAML dump of its arguments. WWW warns the output, XXX dies with the output, YYY prints the output, and ZZZ confesses the output. If YAML doesn't suit your needs, you can switch all the dumps to Data::Dumper format with the '-dumper' option. That's Spiffy! 	Spreadsheet::ReadSXC extracts data from OpenOffice 1.x spreadsheet files (.sxc). It exports the function read_sxc() which takes a filename and an optional reference to a hash of options as arguments and returns a reference to a hash of references to two-dimensional arrays. The hash keys correspond to the names of worksheets in the OpenOffice workbook. The two-dimensional arrays correspond to rows and cells in the respective spreadsheets. If you don't like this because the order of sheets is not preserved in a hash, read on. The 'OrderBySheet' option provides an array of hashes instead. If you prefer to unpack the .sxc file yourself, you can use the function read_xml_file() instead and pass the path to content.xml as an argument. Or you can extract the XML string from content.xml and pass the string to the function read_xml_string(). Both functions also take a reference to a hash of options as an optional second argument. 	The purpose of this (XS) module is to calculate the median (or in principle also other statistics) with confidence intervals on a sample. To do that, it uses a technique called bootstrapping. In a nutshell, it resamples the sample a lot of times and for each resample, it calculates the median. From the distribution of medians, it then calculates the confidence limits. In order to implement the confidence limit calculation, various other functions had to be implemented efficiently (both algorithmically efficient and done in C). These functions may be useful in their own right and are thus exposed to Perl. 	This module provides basic functions used in descriptive statistics. It has an object oriented design and supports two different types of data storage and calculation objects: sparse and full. With the sparse method, none of the data is stored and only a few statistical measures are available. Using the full method, the entire data set is retained and additional functions are available. Whenever a division by zero may occur, the denominator is checked to be greater than the value '$Statistics::Descriptive::Tolerance', which defaults to 0.0. You may want to change this value to some small positive value such as 1e-24 in order to obtain error messages in case of very small denominators. 	Stream::Buffered is a buffer class to store arbitrary length of byte strings and then get a seekable filehandle once everything is buffered. It uses PerlIO and/or temporary file to save the buffer depending on the length of the size. 	String::Approx lets you match and substitute strings approximately. With this you can emulate errors: typing errorrs, speling errors, closely related vocabularies (colour color), genetic mutations (GAG ACT), abbreviations (McScot, MacScot). NOTE: String::Approx suits the task of string matching, not string comparison, and it works for strings, not for text. If you want to compare strings for similarity, you probably just want the Levenshtein edit distance (explained below), the Text::Levenshtein and Text::LevenshteinXS modules in CPAN. See also Text::WagnerFischer and Text::PhraseDistance. (There are functions for this in String::Approx, e.g. adist(), but their results sometimes differ from the bare Levenshtein et al.) If you want to compare things like text or source code, consisting of words or tokens and phrases and sentences, or expressions and statements, you should probably use some other tool than String::Approx, like for example the standard UNIX diff(1) tool, or the Algorithm::Diff module from CPAN. The measure of approximateness is the _Levenshtein edit distance_. It is the total number of "edits": insertions, word world deletions, monkey money and substitutions sun fun required to transform a string to another string. For example, to transform _"lead"_ into _"gold"_, you need three edits: lead gead goad gold The edit distance of "lead" and "gold" is therefore three, or 75%. String::Approx uses the Levenshtein edit distance as its measure, but String::Approx is not well-suited for comparing strings of different length, in other words, if you want a "fuzzy eq", see above. 	The CRC32 module calculates CRC sums of 32 bit lengths. It generates the same CRC values as ZMODEM, PKZIP, PICCHECK and many others. Despite its name, this module is able to compute the checksum of files as well as strings.
